"A great place to start"
Who is it for?
As the word ‘Foundations' suggests, this is an introductory leadership program. It is suitable for leaders at or above the middle level, such as AO4 - AO7 in the Public Service. (For higher-level leaders, or those already with considerable leadership training experience, our Leadership in Action program may be more appropriate.) To get the most out of the program, participants must be willing to think afresh about their leadership behaviour and be able to take a knock to their ego and learn from it.
Leadership Foundations was developed for Public Service clients and therefore addresses many issues faced by leaders in Public Service positions. It can, however, be easily customised to suit private sector or community organisations.
How does it work?
The learning is friendly but demanding (no ‘muddling through' allowed), and above all stimulating and engaging. Presenters provide their expertise, but the real learning for participants is through practice in real-time, real-responsibility work situations, and through mentoring and critiquing each other. Participants learn to do things differently, not just talk or think about things differently. The program covers such topics as:
- Building resilience - the capacity to ‘bounce back'
- Exercising sound judgment within a particular workplace culture
- Becoming aware of one's own ‘blind spots' through giving and receiving feedback
- Building a learning environment at work, and
- Forming leadership communities.
Typical structure
The Leadership Foundations program may well spread over a number of months, but will have at its core a set of intensive workshops. A typical program would be as follows:
- Pre-workshop interviews with participants' supervisor (over 2 weeks)
- 5-day residential workshop
- Mid-program interviews and peer group meetings (over the next few months)
- 3-day non-residential workshop
- Follow-up interviews and further activities with peers (ongoing).
Cost
The cost for programs commencing in 2006 is $4,180 per participant (inclusive of GST) which includes accommodation, meals and materials.
