Leadership in Action

Leadership is so complex today, particularly at the higher levels, that ‘gut feel’ is not enough any more. Leaders need a range of skills at their fingertips and to be able to apply these skills decisively and appropriately. Leadership in Action delivers just what its name implies, with a focus on action rather than talking.

There are no residential Leadership in Action programs booked for 2008. However we have developed a new design for our leadership programs. This new design is non-residential and is family friendly as well as fully accessible. Details follow.

This new program is designed as a strategic leadership program for remarkable leaders. This program combines cutting edge learning technology, network resource group related work, work based action projects integrated planning approaches and strong relational leadership coaching.

The Prelude to Leadership

The prelude to leadership sessions are free sessions open to potential candidates for the program. They will be run experientially to give potential candidates a taste of the types of work being done during the program itself. Please book into these if you are considering the program and would like to know more. Participants for the whole program can view these as part of the program.

Relationship leadership

Relationship leadership is all about treating people with respect. It is also about taking full account of individual's and group's needs when making decisions. It is also about making sure that as a leader you and the others in your leadership team don't become isolated and withdrawn. relationship leadership is about establishing a firm footing from which to develop a strong collegial culture.

Cutting edge learning technology

This program uses and teaches sociometry which is the science of interpersonal relationships. We also use sociodrama which is a technology for looking at and picking apart hot social issues. We strongly work with role training and psychodrama as a way to maximise the learning so it can be translated back to the work place, community or other groups. These processes put learning about leadership in a whole new ball park.

Leadership coaching

Individual and group coaching is built into this program. The coaching is not generic. It is tailored to your needs and circumstance. The coaching happens in the group, in one to one situations and over the phone as required. The group leaders are available on tap as required.

Network resource group

You will be encouraged to develop a strong collegial network amongst all your learning colleagues. Along with this you will also be encouraged to develop a small group of colleagues who you will meet with throughout the program This group, your network resource group or NRG, will significantly impact on your learning from the program. Your NRG is designed to continue on long after the program has concluded.

Work based action projects

You will be encouraged to undertake a significant and important work based project that will be a vehicle for applying your learning. This project is not extra, or added on or theoretical. It is a project that will challenge you and is developed in consultation between you and your supervisor.

Intergrated planning approaches

The program is designed to complement your existing performance and professional development plans. To this end one of the course trainers will conduct an interview with you and your immediate supervisor or other. In this 3-way interview you will discuss not only your requirements, but their hopes and wishes for your learning. You will also discuss their hopes and wishes for your contribution to your organisation.

“I think it’s a terrific activity that more service areas should embrace. Everyone I have spoken to who has undertaken the course has come back with a positive experience. That alone is enough justification.”   more »
